What will it take to make you stay?

I went for a job interview once, many years ago, and one of the interviewers asked me, "What will it take to make you stay?"

The salary was great, much more than other companies were offering, but that question rang alarm bells for me and I walked away from it.

I later spoke to a friend of mine who works there, and he said I made the right choice.  The money alone would never make up for the hassle of working in a place like that. :)

A guy's point of view.

It is my personal belief that when a man sees a woman naked, he begins to lose respect for her.  After he's had sex with her, he begins to lose interest.

This, of course, is just a generalisation and there are exceptions, but not many that I know of.

Drinking water.

It is recommended that we drink 6 to 8 cups of water a day.  This translates to around 2 litres of water.  People who are active and people who live in dry climates need more. But why do we need to drink water every day?

Without water, our organs begin to dry up.  When that happens, they begin to stop working.  Our heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and all the rest need water to function properly.  If they start to slow down, we begin to feel unwell.

I know this from firsthand experience.  One day, I was feeling sluggish and started getting a headache.  I stopped what I was doing and had a long drink of water.  Almost immediately, my headache disappeared and I started feeling more lively.

Some people don't like the taste of water.  I didn't for a long time.  What worked for me was to have a cup of water and a cup of juice on my desk.  Every once in a while, I'd take a sip of water and a sip of juice for the taste.  Constantly sipping water throughout the day is as good as taking long drinks.

We need water in our bodies to function properly.  Some people might find it strange that this fact needs to be mentioned, but there are many people out there who don't like drinking water, and I hope this piece will help them realise the need to do so.

Spelling words.

From the December 2014 Asian edition of the Reader's Digest, page 94.

About why words are spelt the way they are:

[Old English words] were spelled however seemed right and no-one argued the point because most people couldn’t read and those who could all had swords.

- Donyale Harrison, Production Editor, Reader’s Digest.

Just deserts.

I always thought the spelling was "just desserts", but apparently there's only one "s", according to wikitionary:

Noun
just deserts (plural only)

(idiomatic) A punishment or reward that is considered to be what the recipient deserved.

It may appear that they're getting ahead by cheating, but they'll get their just deserts in the end.

Usage notes
Deserts here is the plural of desert, meaning "that which one deserves". "Desert" is now archaic and rarely used outside this phrase.

The spelling just desserts is non-standard. It is sometimes used as a pun in, for example, restaurant names.

I wonder.

If you could be anything you wanted to be, why would you choose to be a foul-mouthed lout?
